African Americans of Des Moines and Polk County

Although African American pioneers arrived in Des Moines, Iowa, in the early 1860s, the population exploded in the 1880s due to the surrounding coal mines. In the 1860s, the Burns Methodist Episcopal Church was the first African American church built in Des Moines, and its only address was "East Side of the River." From 1900 to the 1960s, African Americans across the United States called Center Street "the coolest place in the country." The likes of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and many others graced the hotels and clubs there.

Monster buck in the city: Des Moines, IA

This video features two live deer that are featured in Larry Zach's painting "Big City Bucks". See the painting at www.zachwildlifeart.com. UPDATE This video footage is a bit shaky because it was taken with a handheld camcorder at a high magnification. It shouldn't keep you from seeing how huge the buck is! Story behind the video: Both deer in the Big City Bucks painting were captured on videotape late in October of 1998. This video was taken in an old residential area, south of Grand Avenue, in Des Moines, Iowa near Terrace Hill, the governor's mansion. The first buck in the video is a smaller bodied buck with an enormous non-typical rack. Notice the mowed lawn and street light. This is the buck in the foreground of the Big City Bucks painting. At the time the non-typical was being videotaped the big ten point was across the street with a doe. If you look close you may notice that the non-typical buck is limping as he walks off, possibly the result of a disagreement over which buck would get the doe. The second deer in the video is a huge bodied buck, carrying a large 10 point rack. As he starts to walk off you will notice a vehicle and house in the background. This is the buck running in the background of the Big City Bucks painting.

i listened to Br.Goodwin'n message in full but didnt notice that Hitler was his example-on the contrary he said that "Hitler was stopped by God"meaning that Hitler had to be stopped and desroyed.He anly praised the loyalty of Hitler's staff but its true!!they were loyal to their leader as were loyal people to Stalin in Russia.one can praise the sharp teeth of a wolf without praising and supporting his aggressiveness!if people could stand for a good pastor that Goodwin definitely was as they would stand for some dictator things would have changed for better!But evev Jesus Christ was betrayed.Some people who stayed with br.Goodwin for a long time betrayed him-that's all! as for damnation for those pestors that oppose br.Sawders revelation-we all know that undeserved damnation or curse never come true.so if they dont deserve that curse-nothing is gonna happen to them,God will be the judge.
